Concrete pool deck problems we fix

A crack or a low spot around a pool usually gets worse, because water finds it, works under the slab and softens the ground the deck sits on.

  • Cracks in random places

Wandering cracks usually mean the joints were cut late or skipped. We cut control joints, grooves that tell a crack where to go, so it follows a line we chose.

  • Sunken or tilted sections

A section that drops or tips usually sat on dirt raked level, not dug out and packed. We pack the subgrade, the ground the deck sits on, before we pour.

  • Puddles and water at the house

Puddles, or water running toward the house, mean the slope is wrong. We slope the deck so water runs away from the house and not into the pool.

  • Slick when wet

A smooth, worn top can get slick when it's wet, which matters on a deck people cross barefoot. A new deck gets a textured finish chosen with grip in mind.

Can you patch the deck, or does it need replacing?

If the trouble is on the surface and the slab sits flat and drains, a repair usually holds. If it's sinking, tilting or sending water to the house, the problem is underneath.

  • A repair may be enough when:

    • The slab still sits flat
    • Water runs off the way it should
    • Cracks are thin and not spreading
    • Only the joint caulk has failed
    • The wear is only on the surface
  • A new deck is the better call when:

    • Sections have sunk or tipped
    • Water runs toward the house
    • Cracks keep widening or lifting
    • Drains or coping are being changed
    • You want a different finish

  3. Your written estimate

You get a written estimate that says plainly what's in it and what isn't. We also agree on who handles any permit the city requires, before we start.

  4. Base, forms and pour

Our lead finisher runs the crew as we dig out, pack the base and set the forms, and I'm on site the day we pour.

What a concrete pool deck job includes

  1. Tear-out and haul-off

We break out the old deck and haul it away, so the new one starts on clean ground.

  2. Digging out and packing

We dig out soft spots and pack the base firm, because a deck is only as steady as what's under it.

  3. Fit at the coping

We fit the deck to the coping, the cap along the pool's edge, and leave a flexible joint where they meet.

  4. Forms, slope and drains

We set the forms to the planned slope and fit deck drains where the layout calls for them.

  5. Steel in the slab

We lay rebar, steel bars that hold the slab together if it cracks, before the concrete goes in.

  6. Finish and joints

We give the top a broom finish, brushed ridges for grip, or the texture you chose, and cut the joints.

What sets the price of a pool deck?

Size comes first, then what's under it. A deck that has to come out before we pour, ground with soft spots that need digging out and packing, and a yard where we can't get a truck close all add work. The finish matters too, since a plain broom finish takes less time on the slab than exposed aggregate or a decorative system, and every drain we add or move has to be set before the pour.

Steps down to the deck, which we build as concrete steps, or a pad for the pump and filter add to it, and so does a pool house that needs its own slab foundation. The schedule turns on the tear-out, any permit the city requires and the weather on pour day. Your written estimate lists each of these, so you can see where the money goes.

Why Riverside homeowners call us for pool decks

I learned concrete on a city public works crew, pouring to a written spec with an inspector watching, and I started this business in Riverside to bring that care to homes. On a pool deck that means the base, the joints and the drainage get the most attention, because they decide how the deck holds up long after the surface looks good.

We work out the coping, drains, skimmers and pipes with you before a single form goes in, because moving a drain after the pour means cutting into new concrete. If the budget is tight, I'll suggest a plainer finish before I'll skimp on the base, because you can't see the base on day one but you'd see it later. Call (951) 631-9520 and I'll come take a look.

Pool deck questions we hear

What is the best concrete finish for a pool deck with wet, bare feet?

Choose for grip first, since a pool deck is wet and walked barefoot, and then weigh how hot the finish gets in the sun. Broom, textured, exposed aggregate, coatings, overlays and decorative systems all differ on both counts, and very dark finishes can get uncomfortable in full sun. That's the order we follow when we help you pick.

How long does a concrete pool deck last?

A broom or exposed aggregate finish can last 25 to 30 years or more when it sits on a properly prepared base with good drainage. That's why the base and the slope get as much care from us as the surface. The caulked joint at the pool edge needs watching too, and one maker's guide says to check it every year and repair it when it cracks or pulls away, since most rubbery caulks last five to ten years.

Do I need a permit for a concrete pool deck in Riverside?

Check with the City of Riverside before you plan on skipping one, because the city requires permits for most construction and its list of exempt work names sidewalks and driveways, not pool decks. The city's building official issues permits, and many can go to the property owner, an authorized agent or a licensed contractor. We settle who applies when we write your estimate, and when it's us, we bring our license paperwork to the counter.

Who is allowed to build a pool deck in California?

Any California job of $1,000 or more, including pool construction or repair, has to be done by a contractor with a current, valid license in the right classification. A contractor pulling a Riverside permit shows a license the Contractors State License Board can confirm, plus a current city business license. We're licensed and fully insured, and you're welcome to look us up with the board before you hire anyone.

How much does a concrete pool deck cost in Riverside?

We price each pool deck after I've seen the site, because size, tear-out, base work, access and the finish all move the number. Your estimate comes in writing and spells out what's included and what isn't, so you know exactly what you're paying for.

What causes a concrete pool deck to crack or sink in Riverside?

Soft spots, soil that swells and shrinks, loosely packed fill and soggy ground can all lead to settling and cracking under a deck. For property in its area, the Riverside-Corona Resource Conservation District has free copies of its 1971 soil survey maps for western Riverside County, which list how much each soil swells and shrinks and how much weight it carries. Where the ground is uncertain, a soils engineer may be needed, and I'll tell you if I think yours calls for one.
